The town of Shelby has a diligent and hardworking Historical Society that has worked tirelessly, with great success, to preserve the towns many historic downtown buildings (which are still in use) and historic homes. Due to their good work many of these buildings and homes are now on the National Historic Preservation list.
The town of Shelby NC now has 8 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and 2 high schools to serve the children of Shelby.
Shelby NC has a wonderful non-profit organization known as the Uptown Shelby Association which sponsors many uptown events such as; The Alive After Five Summer Concerts, Movies a la Mode, Uptown Egg Hunt and the Sunday on the Square events as well as an annual Arts of the Square event and many more. There is also the Greater Shelby Community Theater that provides plays of dramas and comedies and more for a change of pace.
