Monroe, North Carolina

The renovated brick Italianate courthouse stills stands as a tribute to the Southern legal center and is on the National Register of Historic Places.  It anchors the South Monroe Historic District, a neighborhood of stately mansions and homes with beautiful architecture.

The quaint downtown with its tree-lined streets and brick pavers, gas streetlights, and benches also offers boutique shopping, spas, salons, and upscale restaurants.  Development downtown, guided by a master plan with landscaping, will preserve the historical charm and increase the vibrancy of the commercial and residential areas.  Exciting community events held there include the Downtown Cruise-In, the June Home and Garden Tour, Movies on the Plaza, Music on Main, the Christmas Parade, and the Open Air Market.

Abundant greenways and trails wind through the landscape.  Union County also hosts largest population of horses in North Carolina.

The community offers tax credits and incentives to attract development.  In addition to the charming downtown retail sector, there are a number of large retailers, major restaurants, and hotels along Highway 74 as well as industrial businesses.  At the Monroe Airport, there is a business park.  Several businesses began in the 1800s.  For example, the Belk department stores started here in 1888.  There are many neighborhood shopping centers, and medical facilities.  South Piedmont Community College provides numerous college transfer and technical curriculum programs, continuing education, and basic skills courses.
