Locust North Carolina homes straddle Stanly and Cabarrus counties east of real estate in Charlotte, about 12 miles beyond the I-485 bypass. Referring to itself as "A City with a Soul," Locust is beginning a new life spurred on by the widening of the main street that ran through town - NC 24/27. Also positioned on NC 200 at the crossroads to Charlotte NC real estate, Albemarle, Concord, and Monroe, the thriving community is poised for growth and expansion.
For the 3,000 residents of homes in Locust, downtown is moving off the highway to 120 special acres within the community called Locust Town Center. The new downtown combines elements of historic villages with old-style downtowns, such as Pinehurst and Davidson, with a modern sense of community and home. As Mayor Harold E. Greene expresses the concept, "Our community values will be preserved while being a model for future generations."
The master plan for the Town Center enhances the community. The plan includes small shops and businesses, houses, townhouses, restaurants, medical offices, banks, and a village green - a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood that nourishes relationships.
Designed to raise the quality of life in Locust, the downtown emphasizes green space, architectural integrity, recreational options, culture, the arts, and family entertainment, and easy access to shopping and commerce.
Established in the late 1860s by immigrants from the British Isles and Germany, the settlers appropriately called their home "Crossroads." The central well close to the locust tree was the only source of water for residents, travelers, and livestock. Hence, it was the hub of the community. By 1869, a post office was established and named for the large blooming locust tree.
Businesses and services available within the small community include restaurants, banks, grocers, pharmacy, video rental, fitness facilities, medical clinics, Stanly Memorial Hospital, dry cleaners, churches, veterinary care, photography studio, salons, gift shops, convenience stores, automotive care, car wash, and florist.
Children and youth attend Locust Elementary (K-8), Running Creek (K-8), and West Stanly High schools. Stanly Community College offers higher education. A branch of the Stanly County Public Library is located here.
Another destination is the Rocky River Vineyards, with its wild turkeys, geese, deer, pond and creek, at the edge of the mountains.
